April Showers Bring May Flowers: Watering Seeds of Leadership

I can’t wait to get my hands in the dirt. I may not have a “green thumb”, but I love picking out containers of eclectic flowers representing colorful new life. Especially after months..and months of Missouri winter brown.

There’s a saying that, "April showers bring May flowers." Just like tending to a garden, the seeds we sow today require patience, nurturing, and the right conditions to blossom into their full potential.

I’m reminded of the story about the bamboo plant, which teaches us the value of patience and perseverance in nurturing growth.

The bamboo plant, often seen as a symbol of resilience and strength, undergoes a remarkable growth process. In its first few years, it requires diligent watering and care, yet it appears to show minimal growth above ground. However, beneath the surface, a complex root system is developing, laying the groundwork for future expansion.

It's not until the seventh year that the bamboo plant experiences exponential growth, shooting up to towering heights seemingly overnight. This remarkable growth spurt is a testament to the years of patience, dedication, and nurturing that went into cultivating the plant.

As leaders, we can draw valuable lessons from the bamboo plant's journey. Just like the bamboo, our efforts to cultivate growth may not always yield immediate results. However, with patience (yes, patience grasshopper), perseverance, and the right support, we can lay the foundation for exponential growth in the future.

What seeds are you watering as a leader? Are you investing in personal and professional development, nurturing relationships, and cultivating a supportive environment for growth?

Two of my favorite sayings are: “It’s never too late to make the rest of your life, the best of your life” and “What you focus on grows.” What you plant and nurture today will blossom into a vibrant garden tomorrow (although that could mean seven years from now- remember the patience thing). Keep watering those seeds of greatness and watch beautiful things bloom.
